Rick Warren

Hmm.

I'm a pragmatist most days. And I love me some O. So I can see the arguments behind Summers and Clinton as part of the Cabinet. I can even admit that I kinda feel good about Hill being around the hill as an attack dog for her former opponent. At least she isn't sowing dissent somewhere in the background.

But I've got to agree with the Kitchen Table.

What's the deal with Obama choosing gay-bashing homophobe Rick Warren to give the inaugural invocation?

@kis... umm since when did having a conviction become equal to "GAY-Bashing"?!

And see this is where i get pissy. disagreeing doesn't make someone a bigot, or a homophobe for that matter. You may be upset at The President-Elect's choice, but being inflamatory does nothing but propagandize the situation.

First off, read this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081221/ap_on_re_us/warren_speech

secondly, i may have to disagree with the kitchen table about the Inauguration belonging to all of us... It's kinda up to Mr. O so whether he wants so have Rick Warren pray or David Blaine levitate, ITS HIS PARTY!

Countless Men and Women of Faith have prayed on momentous occasions...I am sure that there were those who wish that God not even be mentioned at such events, let alone prayed to. The prayer is not about being left-wing or right-wing. It about prayer.

Think about it, how many times have you bowed you head and prayed with someone who doesn't believe EXACTLY as you do? Probably quite a few times... I know I have. And that is because its not political. Its a coming together to celebrate and partake in something that transcends the disparate beliefs/convictions of the individuals that are present. It a moment to focus on what connects us. Not what separates us.

Warren has not called down fire and brimstone on the GLBTQ community, and i don't think it is going to be apart of the invocation.

Hear me out: THERE IS NO ONE CHOICE THAT WAS GOING TO PLEASE EVERYONE.

The O has spoken, and he want the man to pray at HIS inauguration. It just that simple. Its not a political statement about same-sex marriage.

The villian-ization is a bit over the top...

Warren is on record that being homosexual is the same as being a child molester/pedophile.

Gay bashing.

And when I have time I'll find the article where he said it. I'm sure there are plenty floating around since he was picked to do invocation. (Probably when I'm on Xmas break)

The gay marriage thing is another issue. I already knew O was against it (although pro-civil unions) and no I don't think being against it is the same as gay bashing or being homophobic. This was discussed earlier in the Common Room and Tea and Such. It is complicated and while I fall on the side of PRO, I can see that a more difficult discussion needs to happen. THAT is not a clearcut issue.

But when my gay friends get called pedophiles because of who they love, I've got a problem.

okay, you find that article cuz that is not the reality of anything i've read or heard...And the jounalist in my has a feeling that what you read was an extrapalation of something that was taken out of context.

Warren is not one to go on the offensive like that...It not how he usually gets down. So yeah I wanna see the article.

I don't have a problem Rick Warren. In the Christian church being gay is a sin, just like any other sin. The correct teaching teach to hate the sin and love the person. Hate lying, cheating, fornication and homosexuality, but love the people who do those things. (Because no one is sin free). Now, of course, people put their own negative spins on that, but that's the bottom line.

In the Christian church sex before marriage is a sin. Most people disagree with that teaching. So if there was a pastor who had a campaign for abstinence who was doing the inaugural prayer, would everyone be so mad?

@ Maven...#1 i dunno about the inaugural festivities/activities being HIS party...the activities are the nation's party.
#2 if you were gonna make a believer out of me, you should have picked a better article. that article PLAINLY states that his feelings on "redefinition of marriage" include polygamy, incest and child abuse...really?! wow....

now, to get back to the topic at hand and not harp on you and kis's argument...
... i am glad O is open to all sides. truly. he said he wanted the input, opinions and expertise of all and he is obviously a man of his word. the same way i take issue over things i have heard in my own baptist church (but still go), i am hanging in there and will bow my head at pastor warren's prayer as well. what is the most unfortunate is the fact that CHRISTianity has created environments and mentalities focused at casting stones and hatred. sad day. :(

@boogie, again though. even the article i posted was another reporters recap. I think this point and his intent is much more clear in the context of the video i posted.

and I guess that is another reason i should never be president... cuz it would me MY inauguration... it could be an only child thing.

@T so very true. it is interesting that as Warren points out in the video that everyone is so quick to point out the shortcomings of others instead of their own. gluttony, materialism, lying, gossip, unkindness--all of these get constantly overlooked in order to "address" beliefs on sex. Gotta love the puritan traditions in this country! ::eyes rolling:: so frustrating sometimes.
