They're Just Not That Into US

Here's some food for thought while I'm stuck in traffic, ladies.

Spotting the Stereotypes: He’s Just Not That Into You

He's not that into you, Sista

I'm interested in reading your perspectives on these types of movies. I felt the same way about SATC, the movie. I'm going to see "he's just not that into you" with my book club ladies and I'm starting to have second thoughts. But it's not like I expected it to be any different than what it is.

That blog link was really upsetting. I'm so sick of that portrayal of black women... I don't think I want to see the movie now.

I guess I just feel like... what were you expecting? Hollywood and TV are light years behind real life as far as accurate depictions of American life go. The world isn't as white, as gay or as affluent as TV and the movies makes it seem... but it's TV and the movies.

I'll probably wait for this on video, but I'm not going to boycott or be upset or anything.

I don't think I'll boycott it because I doubt they would notice and I did expect it. It just bothers me that we are often supporters/fans of movies and TV shows like SATC that don't display accurate or full depictions of us and accept it as "the way it is." I guess I would be more ok with it if all the black movies nowadays weren't from TP or TD. What happened to those college days when we would literally take a caravan to the show on the night the new black movie came out? Somehow it felt like it happened a rather often but probably not.

i was *almost* surprised when HJNTIY didn't have a black character, main or supporting. I guess i got a little comfy after SATC did ask JHud to make an appearance, which DID come as a surprise. i am going to see the former, mostly b/c some friends initiated the event. otherwise, i definitely would have caught it at my parents' house this christmas on HBO. outside of the fact it has no real black characters, it just doesn't look like a good movie.

p.s., i'm going to a matinee.

Honestly... I was through in the first scene when they showed the Village with the goats RUNNING through the village and the WACK huts...
